Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has recorded substantial and encouraging household coverage progress in its fight against poliovirus, owing to an effective, data-driven strategy and strong administrative leadership under the supervision of the provincial government.
A high-level review meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Shahab Ali Shah discovered that the province has achieved exceptional vaccination coverage during recent National Immunization Days, reflecting improved planning, enhanced field supervision, and growing community trust. The meeting was attended by senior officials of the Health Department, while Deputy Commissioners participated via video link.
According to official data, 99 percent household coverage was achieved in the majority of the province, while South Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded 93 percent coverage, despite operating in traditionally high-risk and hard-to-reach areas.
The meeting noted that the use of real-time digital monitoring systems, independent post-campaign assessments, and rigorous data verification mechanisms has significantly improved transparency and accountability. On the directions of the Chief Secretary, Independent Monitoring Unit assessments were conducted in selected districts, ensuring that campaign outcomes are objectively verified and continuously improved.
It was highlighted that vaccinators have already accessed 64 percent of communities in January 2026, demonstrating expanded immunization outreach and improved access, particularly in previously underserved localities. Moreover, improvements in routine immunization indicators, including BCG, Penta, MR, and OPV coverage, show that polio campaigns are strengthening the overall health system.
While acknowledging localized challenges in a few districts, Chief Secretary emphasized that targeted interventions, focused micro-planning, and enhanced community engagement are being actively implemented to address remaining gaps.
The Chief Secretary reaffirmed the provincial government’s unwavering commitment to a polio-free Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, stating that coordinated field operations, and community partnership will remain the cornerstone of the province’s strategy. He applauded the team performances in districts and said that the outreach ratio to communities and household coverage was remarkable during the December 2025 campaign.
With February 2026 National Immunization Days preparations well underway, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continues to move forward with confidence, determination, and measurable results toward the complete eradication of polio, he said.
