On the directives of the Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety & Halal Food Authority has successfully completed a three-day province-wide special campaign against the use of substandard frying oil.
During the campaign, food safety teams inspected 2,054 food outlets across the province while 486 samples of frying oil were tested using modern oil testing meters.
According to the spokesperson of the Food Authority, 399 samples were declared satisfactory, while 87 outlets were found using unhealthy and repeatedly used (rancid) frying oil. As a result, food safety teams discarded a total of 2,204 liters of substandard and hazardous oil on the spot.
Providing further details, the spokesperson said that 757 liters of oil were discarded in Mardan, 575 liters in Peshawar, 205 liters in Swabi, 120 liters in Karak, 102 liters in Upper Dir, 100 liters in Swat, and 80 liters in Dera Ismail Khan. Significant quantities of substandard oil were also confiscated and discarded in Nowshera, Charsadda, Buner, Kohat, Lower Chitral, Lower Dir, Mansehra and Malakand.
During the campaign, special inspections were carried out at kebab shops, hotels, sweets shops, pakora and samosa outlets, and iftar points. Several businesses found using substandard oil were issued warnings and improvement notices, while heavy fines were imposed for violations.
Director General KP Food Safety & Halal Food Authority Kashif Iqbal Jilani appreciated the efforts of the food safety teams for successfully carrying out the campaign. He said such special drives would continue to ensure the provision of safe and quality food to the public.
He further warned that strict legal action will be taken against those violating food safety and hygiene standards.
