KP Food Authority seizes 3,000kg substandard, rotten meat from passenger bus in Peshawar

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority has seized and discarded around 3,000 kilograms of substandard and rotten meat recovered from a passenger bus during a crackdown against unsafe food in Peshawar.
According to a spokesperson for the Food Authority, Peshawar food safety team set up a checkpoint near Kala Mandi on GT Road and inspected vehicles transporting food items. During the inspection, a passenger bus was found carrying a large quantity of substandard and rotten meat, which was subsequently destroyed at the WSSP dumping area.
Officials said the meat was being transported in concealed compartments of the bus in violation of food safety and hygiene standards. Following inspection, the meat was declared unfit for human consumption.
Legal proceedings have been initiated against the owners involved in the transportation and supply of the unsafe meat under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety Act, the spokesperson said.
Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Food Dr Muhammad Israr Khan lauded the team on successful operation and said no leniency would be shown to elements involved in supplying substandard and hazardous food to the public.
Special Assistant directed the relevant Food Authority officials to intensify action against unsafe food and ensure effective monitoring of the transportation and sale of food items across the province.
Dr Israr said the provision of safe, hygienic and quality food to the public was among the government’s top priorities. He added that monitoring and enforcement activities by food safety teams would be further strengthened.
He warned that strict legal action would be taken against those playing with public health, stressing that no compromise would be made on ensuring the availability of safe food to consumers.
