NAB Hands Over Rs. 6 Billion to KP Government in First Phase of Recovery from Upper Kohistan Financial Fraud
In a landmark development underscoring the State’s commitment to accountability and the protection of public resources, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has initiated the transfer of recovered assets linked to one of the largest financial fraud investigations in Pakistan’s history.
At an official ceremony held in Peshawar, Chairman NAB, Lt. Gen. (R) Nazir Ahmad, formally handed over assets valued at more than Rs. 6 billion to the Chief Secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, marking the first phase of a broader asset recovery process arising from a major corruption investigation conducted by NAB Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The recovery stems from an extensive investigation conducted under the leadership of the Chairman NAB, Lieutenant General (R) Nazir Ahmed and led by Director General NAB KP, Farmanullah, along with the Combined Investigation Team (CIT), which uncovered a sophisticated network allegedly responsible for the unlawful diversion and misappropriation of public funds over several years.
The inquiry, authorized in April 2025, exposed large-scale financial irregularities involving the fraudulent withdrawal of public funds from Head of Account G-10113 in District Upper Kohistan. Investigators established that more than Rs. 37 billion had been unlawfully extracted through the manipulation of treasury instruments and misuse of official financial procedures over a period of nearly a decade.
Through advanced financial tracing, forensic analysis and coordinated investigative efforts, NAB KP successfully identified complex money trails, scrutinized over 1,500 bank accounts and traced assets acquired through proceeds of crime.
A major breakthrough was achieved when investigators uncovered a key account belonging to Mumtaz Khan, allegedly used to channel illicit funds. Financial records revealed transactions amounting to approximately Rs. 17 billion through the account within a relatively short period. Timely intervention by NAB KP resulted in the freezing of substantial funds and prevented further dissipation of public assets.
The investigation has yielded unprecedented recoveries, including the voluntary surrender of assets through plea bargain arrangements and the freezing of assets linked to the alleged fraud.
According to NAB officials, the total amount traced during the investigation exceeded Rs. 37 billion. Assets worth more than Rs. 27 billion have been frozen under NAB authority, while recoveries through plea bargains have crossed Rs. 10 billion. Assets valued at more than Rs. 6 billion have been transferred to the provincial government in the first phase.
The assets handed over to the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa include cash holdings, gold, high-value commercial and residential properties, and luxury vehicles identified during the course of the investigation.
Addressing the ceremony, Chairman NAB praised the professionalism and dedication of the investigation team and described the case as a significant example of the Bureau’s institutional resolve against corruption.
“This investigation demonstrates that complex financial crimes can be effectively detected, investigated and prosecuted through professional, evidence-based accountability mechanisms. The recovery of these assets reflects our commitment to ensuring that public resources are protected and restored for the benefit of citizens,” he said.
The Chairman also acknowledged the leadership of DG NAB KP Farmanullah and the efforts of the Combined Investigation Team for conducting an extensive financial investigation that resulted in substantial recoveries and the identification of assets linked to the alleged fraud.
NAB emphasized that the recovery effort remains ongoing. With assets exceeding Rs. 27 billion currently under freezing orders and further legal proceedings underway, additional recoveries are expected in the coming months.
The Bureau has already initiated preparations for the next phase of asset realization and transfer. Upon completion of legal formalities, further recovered assets will be returned to the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to ensure that public funds are restored to their intended purpose of serving the people.
The National Accountability Bureau reiterated its commitment to pursuing corruption cases through transparent, professional and lawful processes. NAB stated that it would continue to trace, recover and repatriate misappropriated public assets while holding those responsible accountable under the law.
The successful recovery and return of these assets, according to NAB, sends a clear message that public resources are a national trust and that every effort will be made to safeguard them from misuse and corruption.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, certificates of appreciation were awarded to members of the NAB Khyber Pakhtunkhwa investigation team in recognition of their exemplary investigative work and professional handling of the case. A commemorative shield was also presented to investigative journalist Arshad Aziz Malik in acknowledgment of his investigative reporting.

Barriers to Meetings with PTI Founder Reflect Fear of Imran Khan: Shafii Jan
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Information and Public Relations Shafi Jan has said that preventing lawyers and family members from meeting Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder chairman Imran Khan by federal and Punjab governments is a serious violation of Constitution, law, and democratic values.
Shafi Jan termed the move condemnable and regrettable, adding that it is clear evidence of authorities fear of Imran Khan. Shafi Jan further said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi along with members of Provincial assembly had travelled to Adiala Jail to express solidarity with PTI founder Imran Khan and his sisters.
He stated that federal government, in a display of panic, erected barriers outside Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House in Islamabad and deployed a heavy police contingent.
He further stated that serious negligence had been shown regarding Imran Khan’s health due to political victimisation. lack of timely and adequate medical care adversely affected Khan’s eyesight.
He demanded that Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi be immediately shifted to Al-Shifa Eye Hospital and be granted unrestricted access to their personal physicians and family members.
Provincial Minister further said that every attempt to isolate Imran Khan has failed because public continues to stand firmly with him. He maintained that government, fearful of Khan’s popularity, has resorted to political revenge, but such tactics cannot diminish people’s affection and support for him.
Shafi Jan added that treatment being meted out to Imran Khan has been exposed before world. He said that Khan had been kept in solitary confinement for more than 200 days and that his sister’s last meeting with him took place in December 2025.
He further said that “incompetent group” that came to power through “Form 47” had instituted false cases against Imran Khan to safeguard its rule and had set worst examples of political victimisation. He warned that days of the current rulers were numbered.
Shafi Jan also said that similar tactics motivated by fear of Imran Khan were being employed in the Gilgit-Baltistan elections. However, he said, public is now fully aware of such strategies and can see through them.
Shafi Jan concluded by saying that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf secured a public mandate in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for a third time due to Imran Khan’s vision, public welfare agenda, development initiatives and effective governance. He described Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as PTI’s strongest political stronghold, adding that the party’s increasing representation in the provincial assembly in successive elections reflects the people’s unwavering trust and confidence.

Govt Set to Present Fifth Consecutive Budget Amid Record Inflation, Poverty and Unemployment: No Good News in Upcoming Federal Budget: KP Finance Advisor Muzzammil Aslam
Advisor to the KP Chief Minister on Finance Muzzammil Aslam, while addressing a press conference at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House in Islamabad, said that on one hand the Shehbaz Sharif government is set to present its fifth consecutive budget, while on the other hand the country is facing historic levels of unemployment and inflation, and the economy remains stagnant. He said that no government in Pakistan’s history has presented five consecutive budgets. According to him, there is no good news in the preparations for the upcoming federal budget.
Muzzammil Aslam stated that, according to the government, the economic growth rate will reach 3.7 percent by the end of the current fiscal year, while the target for next year is 4 percent. He said that the extensive promotion of the “Uraan Pakistan” initiative had created the impression that the economy would witness significant growth, but nothing improved.
He added that the government has projected inflation at 8.2 percent for the next fiscal year. He questioned the government’s claim of 3.7 percent economic growth this year when major crops recorded growth of only 0.6 percent. He further pointed out that while the government claims livestock grew by 3.8 percent, it simultaneously reports fodder crops registering negative growth of 2.1 percent, which, according to him, reflects the credibility of the government’s growth claims.
Muzzammil Aslam said the government is highlighting only a few selected sectors to claim industrial growth. According to official figures, the automobile industry grew by 60 percent, auto transport equipment by 40 percent, furniture by 20 percent, and football manufacturing by 23 percent. However, electricity generation declined by 10 percent. He said the government also claims that small-scale industries are growing at 8.5 percent, but its own statistics do not match, raising questions about how economic growth can be achieved under such circumstances.
He further stated that the government claims the size of the economy has reached $453 billion, which should result in higher per capita income. However, he noted that data from the Planning Commission of Pakistan indicates the worst levels of unemployment and poverty in the last 21 years. He questioned how such economic expansion could coincide with worsening social indicators.
Muzzammil Aslam said that while increasing numbers of people are leaving the country in search of employment opportunities, the government claims to have created 1.8 million jobs. According to government figures, 1.1 million jobs were created in the services sector, 400,000 in industry, and 300,000 in agriculture. He argued that with major crops growing by only 0.6 percent and industries facing severe challenges, the government’s employment claims appear questionable. He added that the government is projecting the creation of another 2 million jobs next year.
He also criticized the government’s trade projections, calling them highly disappointing. According to him, the government has set an export target of $32.8 billion for next year, while Pakistan’s exports had already reached around $32 billion in 2022. He questioned how such a modest increase could support claims of strong economic growth and Government claims imports are projected to rise to $70 billions.
He further noted that the government has set a remittance target of $42 billion. He argued that when a country’s remittance target exceeds its export target, it reflects the weakness of economic growth and productive capacity.
Muzzammil Aslam said the government has announced a development budget of Rs1.126 trillion, while the total cost of the announced projects stands at Rs10 trillion. This means that only Rs1.126 trillion will be allocated against projects worth Rs10 trillion. Given the government’s own inflation estimate of 8.2 percent, he argued that many of these projects are likely to remain stagnant as rising costs will reduce the value of available funds.
He further stated that out of 786 federal development projects, only six belong to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, despite the province accounting for about 17 percent of Pakistan’s population. He warned that once these six projects are completed, there will be no federal PSDP project left for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The total value of these six projects is only Rs36 billion, meaning that out of Rs10 trillion worth of development projects nationwide, only Rs36 billion is allocated to the province.
Muzzammil Aslam added that the government has earmarked Rs264 billion for the National Highway Authority (NHA), covering a total of 94 projects. Of these, only 10 projects are for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and out of the Rs264 billion allocation, the province has been allocated only Rs8.5 billion.
